Navigation and Watchkeeping

Intended for skippers of vessels less than 16.5m and anyone taking a navigational watch on any vessel. Forms part of the under 16.5m Skippers Ticket, which the MCA intends to make mandatory.
• The 5 day Navigation and Watchkeeping course is intended for anyone taking a navigational watch and skippers of vessels less than 16.5m operating beyond 20nm miles of a safe haven.
• The 2 day navigation and Watchkeeping course is intended for skippers of vessels less than 16.5m operating within 20nm miles of a safe haven.
When deciding on Watchkeeping arrangements for fishing vessels of less than 24m operating in the limited area, the requirements of MGN 313 (F) Keeping a safe navigational watch on fishing vessels must be followed.
Please note: that the qualifications gained apply to the person and not the vessel.

 

Tuition Fee: Free (subject to eligibility) or £240
Thanks to support from the Department for Transport and the European Fisheries Fund, Seafish is currently able to fund the tuition fees for this course for experienced fishermen, providing they hold certificates in Sea Survival, First Aid, Fire Fighting and Safety Awareness.

 

Course Aim:
To provide the skills associated with keeping a safe navigational watch.

Explain the uses and limitations of electronic navigational aids
Explain the IALA buoyage system
Understand lights, shapes and sounds in navigation
Understand vessel emergency procedures
